DONT ASK DONT TELL: Pokemon & Anime (+ Ivy Drippe's Farewell Party) w/ guest DJ Slivik

The earliest form of commercial Japanese animation emerged in 1917. However it wasn’t until the 1960’s with the works of Osamu Tezuka that the characteristic style we know today really took hold internationally. As wiki puts it: “Being hand-drawn, anime is separated from reality by a crucial gap of fiction that provides an ideal path for escapism that audiences can immerse themselves into with relative ease. Diverse art styles are used and character proportions and features can be quite varied, including characteristically large emotive or realistically sized eyes.”

The hyper escapist realm of anime has grown to infatuate Americans (including a huge queer population) more and more with each passing decade. Probably do to its fantastical elements that often blur gender roles and societal norms. There are even strictly queer anime that straight people watch because they themselves are probably in the closet.

…Segway into Pokemon…

Pokemon has been around for 21 years! But it wasn’t until the launch of Pokemon GO that the craze extended into every realm of society. Walking down the street you will see indicators of everyday businesses jumping on board offering deals if you catch a Pokemon in their establishment. At Tasty Burger you can show them a screen cap and get free tater tots! Good ol’ America.

DADT has always been a place of expression and pushing boundaries. Therefore it only made perfect sense to take an art form such as anime and celebrate it for a night of wild fashion, make up and debauchery! Come dressed as any one of your favorite anime characters- Pokemon or not! Or come dressed as any one of the 726 distinctive Pokemon species!
